The Things That Actually Make Us Well...

We live in a world that is constantly telling us how to be healthier.

There are supplements for this, powders for that, gadgets to track our sleep, programs to optimize our health, and endless products promising to make us feel better.

And while some of these things can certainly have their place, I sometimes wonder if we've forgotten something very important:

Perhaps the things that make us well are much simpler than we think.

Our bodies are wonderfully designed.  They don't necessarily need more.  They often need us to get out of the way and give them what they've always needed.

Sunlight.

Morning sunlight helps remind our bodies that a new day has begun.  Get away from the corporate tech and get into the sun while grounded.  Get your skin and eyes in the unfiltered morning UV-A and Near-Infrared sun at dawn.  Stand barefoot in the morning wet grass, surf or sand (grounding).  This re-sulfates your skin's cholesterol, lowers your energy resistance and is amazingly beneficial to your overall health. This is nature's recipe!

Real food.

Food that grows from the earth.  Fresh vegetables and fruits.  Nourishing fats.  Quality proteins.  Foods that don't require a long list of ingredients to understand what they are. There is something deeply satisfying about eating food that is close to its natural form.

Movement.

We don't have to punish our bodies with exercise.  Walking, stretching, gardening, dancing, swimming, practicing yoga or simply moving throughout the day can be a beautiful way to honor the body we're living in.

Sleep.

Sleep isn't a luxury or something we should squeeze in when everything else is finished.  It is when our bodies repair, restore and reset.  Sometimes one of the healthiest things we can do is simply turn off the lights, put down the phone and allow ourselves to rest.

Nature.

There is something healing about being outside.  The trees, the wind, the changing seasons, the sound of birds and the feel of our feet on the earth can quiet something inside us that we didn't even realize was noisy.

Human connection.

A conversation with a friend.  A hug.  A shared meal.  Laughter around the kitchen table. Being with people who make us feel seen and loved.  These things don't come in a bottle, but they nourish us in ways that are just as real.

And then there is rest.

Not just sleep, but moments when we aren't accomplishing anything.  When we aren't scrolling, answering, producing or checking something off a list.  Moments when we can simply be.

Maybe wellness isn't about adding one more thing to our already busy lives.

Maybe it's about returning to the things we've always known.

Go outside.
Eat real food.
Move your body.
Get enough sleep.
Breathe deeply.
Spend time with people you love.
Put the phone down.
Notice the changing seasons.
Laugh more.
Rest.

And perhaps, most importantly... listen to your body.  It has been communicating with you all along.

We don't have to do everything perfectly.  We don't need to chase every new health trend.  Sometimes the most profound changes begin with the simplest things.
